Sure, you could pick up the Silent Hill HD Collection, but those notoriously broken ports of both Silent Hill 2 and 3 are downright insulting to anyone that has played the original versions.

The original PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC versions are still regarded as the best way to play this game in its full glory. Sadly, despite all the praise that has been lavished upon it, Silent Hill 2 is getting harder to source and actually play. Even those with just a passing interest in gaming as a medium owe it to themselves to try this one out - provided that they can actually source it. Those limitations aside, Silent Hill 2 is a game that holds-up remarkably well in the modern era, with its graphics still looking crisp and detailed, as well as its stomach-churning sound design putting many recent releases to shame.

It’s perhaps the only blemish on what is an otherwise flawless game. Within a good twenty minutes of playing, you’ll quickly become accustomed to the way things work, and it’s only a very rare occasion that these issues put a dampener on the experience. Yes, Silent Hill 2’s controls and camera movement do feel incredibly archaic and will certainly be a huge turn-off to those more accustomed to modern gaming interfaces, but those flaws really aren’t as bad as they’re made out to be. Related: Nobody Is Asking for Resident Evil Multiplayerįrom each foray down dark corridors in search of Key Items to the tense and brutal close-quarters combat encounters, Silent Hill 2 is a consistently atmospheric and unnerving experience that many - including its own sequels - have tried to emulate, but they’ve always fallen way short of the mark. The experience never lets up from there, with each new locale to explore offering all manner of deeply disturbing frights that never fail to catch you off guard, as well as brain-tickling riddles that are every bit as fiendish as the monsters that are baying for James' blood. You must press on through the fog and brave the malformed beings that lurk behind every corner to find James’ wife Mary - a quest that soon finds James peeling back the veil of his psyche and uncovering the horrible truth that's perverting the world around him. Once you find your way into the Wood Side Apartment building, everything falls into place. Despite stepping out into the open air, it all feels very claustrophobic, and all you can do is venture into the fog to uncover the truth.Ī particularly long walk through a misty country pathway sets the scene perfectly - you know that danger lurks ahead, but turning back is not an option. As soon as players are given control of James after he stares at himself - or as was recently discovered, the player themselves - in a filthy bathroom mirror, you can feel the crushing weight of the scenario bearing down upon you.

Even when compared to the other games in the franchise, the story of James Sunderland’s ill-fated journey into the foggy vacation town is a singularly haunting experience whose ice-cold fingers will gently glide along your neck for years to come. From its sobering opening moments, right up until the heart-wrenching finale, Silent Hill 2 is so incredibly intoxicating that it should come with some kind of warning label. It may sound cliché, but Silent Hill 2 truly is a game like no other.

Free from the first game’s narrative shackles, Team Silent quickly realized that it wasn’t the characters that really drew in players the first time around, but the eponymous town itself, with its unsolved mysteries and unpredictable warping of reality being the real star of the show. Armed with this realization, the team approached Silent Hill 2 from the perspective that the town itself would be a conduit that allowed them to tackle deeply personal stories and broach taboo subjects that few other developers would dare to touch.
